This West Glacier family photos session at Lake McDonald was a perfect mix of relaxed family moments and senior portraits inside Glacier National Park.
This family wanted updated family photos while they were visiting Glacier Park, and it was also the perfect time to take a few senior-style portraits for one of the boys.
Combining family photos with senior portraits is a great way to capture this season of life. Teen years go by quickly, and having photos of the whole family together while also celebrating big milestones like graduation makes the session even more meaningful.
We began the evening in one of my favorite field locations just outside the park entrance. Starting in an open field always helps families relax into the session.
The boys walked through the grass, joked with each other, and their parents joined in for relaxed family photos. With the mountains in the distance and the soft evening light coming through the grass, everything felt calm and natural.
During this part of the session we captured:
• relaxed family portraits
• sibling photos of the two brothers
• individual portraits of the senior boy
• portraits of the parents!
Fields near West Glacier create a really natural setting for photos. Nothing feels stiff or overly posed, which is exactly what most families want.

Senior photos in Glacier National Park are always special because the landscape adds so much character to the images. Instead of a studio backdrop, the mountains, fields, and natural light become part of the portrait.
Some of my favorite images from this part of the session were the simple moments. Standing in the tall grass looking out toward the mountains or laughing while walking back toward his family.
These photos felt relaxed and true to who they are, which is always the goal.
As the sun started getting lower in the sky, we drove into the park and finished the session along the shoreline of Lake McDonald near Apgar Village.
Lake McDonald is one of the most recognizable places in Glacier National Park. The colorful rocks along the shoreline, the clear water, and the mountain views make it an incredible place for photos.
This part of the session felt very relaxed. The family walked along the water and spent time together while the sun slowly set behind the mountains.
Golden hour at Lake McDonald always brings the most beautiful light. The warm glow reflecting on the water made the last photos of the evening feel extra special.
One of the best things about scheduling a family photo session in West Glacier is how much variety you can get in one evening.
During this session we photographed in:
• mountain fields
• forest edges
• the shoreline of Lake McDonald
All of these locations are within a short distance of each other, which makes it easy to create a gallery that shows different parts of Glacier National Park.
For families visiting Montana, it is also a great way to remember your trip. Photos from a place like Glacier become more than just portraits. They turn into memories of the experience you shared together.

Sessions in West Glacier can include family portraits, senior photos, sibling photos, and plenty of candid moments along the way.
Locations like the fields near West Glacier and the shoreline of Lake McDonald in Apgar Village create a beautiful backdrop while still allowing the photos to feel relaxed and natural.
Family sessions with teens are always some of my favorites because they capture such an important stage of life.
